Spotlight
Why Read It? Top consultant, trainer, and coach Susan Fowler says stop trying to motivate people! It's frustrating for everyone involved, and it just doesn't work. You can't motivate people -- they are already motivated but generally in superficial and short-term ways. Applying recent psychological discoveries, Susan lays out a tested course of action that will help leaders guide their people toward the kinds of motivation that not only increase productivity and engagement but also give them a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Be sure to register for Susan's free webinar on October 7th where she talks about how motivation works and how you should stop beating your people with carrots. Register now!

Motivate by Not Motivating

In this issue of the Communiqué, we explore how traditional ways of motivating people just don't work -- and what does work instead.

But don't we already know how to motivate people? Apparently not. Susan Fowler presents Five Popular Methods of Motivation That Just Don't Work.

Which BK Book Is This?
So which well-known BK book is this a foreign edition of?

Well, it's a Slovenian edition of one of our bestsellers titled Jaz Sem Premaknil Tvoj Sir, and there seems to be a maze  and some cheese -- and you probably already have guessed this book if you're a BK fan.

If you're still stumped, this is the original BK book.
On the Subject of Motivating Change
Some people motivate change in the workplace, others do it on a national level. In The American Revolution of 1800, author Dan Sisson and Thom Hartmann provide a definitive window into key concepts that have formed the backdrop of our democracy: the nature of revolution, stewardship of power, liberty, and the ever-present danger of factions and tyranny.

Most contemporary historians celebrate Jefferson's victory over Adams in 1800 as the beginning of the two-party system, but Jefferson saw his election as a peaceful revolution by the American people who were overturning an elitist faction that was stamping out cherished constitutional rights and trying to transform our young democracy into an authoritarian state. If anything, our current two-party system is a repudiation of Jefferson's view of revolution and his earnest desire that the people as a whole, not any faction or clique, would triumph in government.

End Notes

Last time, I issued this challenge, and no one could guess correctly what the intentional error was that has been made on every newsletter --  but that didn't stop Eric Carlson from sending a snarky response. Congratulations, Eric, I like snark, and so you win even though you didn't guess correctly. The answer to the challenge can be found here.
Your next challenge can be found here.
Email me with any comments or rants. And on a completely unrelated note, here are some overly dramatic road signs

Oh, and here is your biweekly dose of random.

P.S. -- this isn't real, is it?
